How To Start Out In A Career In Agriculture

If you’re not from a family farming, breaking into agriculture can be a bit tricky. Don’t lose hope, though, as anyone can have a successful career in agriculture. Here are four of the best tips for starting out your career in agriculture if you aren’t sure how to break into the industry.

Take on a Seasonal Job With a Local Farmer

If you live near farm country, you can try to find a seasonal position with a local farmer who can help familiarize you with the basics of modern agriculture. This is a good way to learn about seed, fertilizers, planting techniques and essential farming equipment. Many farmers will welcome the help, as it’s often hard to find workers who are willing to take on the difficult work of farming.

Take a Degree in Agriculture

If you want to work in a more technical job or plan on working for a larger agricultural corporation, you may want to get a college degree in agriculture. These degrees will teach you almost everything there is to know about farming, though you will likely still have to put in some real time on a farm after you graduate. An agricultural degree can also make it easier to get your first serious job in this sector.

Become a Traveling Organic Farmhand

If you want to travel and learn about farming at the same time, you may be able to do it by becoming a mobile organic farm worker. An organization called the Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF) helps connect farmers with workers who will travel and live on farms. These opportunities are especially good for young people who are willing to put in some hard work for room and board while exploring the world.

Get Experience Working at a Nursery

If you want to work in agricultural supply, you may want to start out by getting a job at a commercial nursery. These facilities sell many of the plants that end up in small farmers’ fields, especially vegetables. This is a great place to start if you plan on working in agriculture without actually being a farmer yourself.

Of course, there are many other ways to start your career in agriculture. However, these four ideas should help you get your feet wet in the industry, irrespective of what direction you want your career to take. While agriculture may be hard work, it is one of the most rewarding careers you can choose for yourself.
